What is massage therapy?

Massage is the systemized manipulation of the body’s soft tissues, especially the skin and muscles, by a trained, certified, and licensed bodywork professional. It is applied by a massage therapist usually with the hands, fingers, elbows, or forearms. It can also be applied through a device or machine, such as through the Hypervolt percussion device.

According to the Mayo Clinic, studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing pain, stress, tight muscles, and improving blood flow. It can also help with:

  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain

Our massage therapists are an integral part of BackFit’s interdisciplinary approach.

There are many forms of massage which can be used to promote healing. Here are the techniques that we focus on:

  • Lymphatic Drainage Massage
  • Myofascial Release Technique
  • Prenatal Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Swedish Massage Technique
  • Trigger Point Massage

Your BackFit professional is trained in therapeutic massage methodology and may know even more advanced techniques based on their education. Note that we generally do not have Thai massage, shiatsu massage, or other techniques not listed here, nor do we practice hot stone.

Combining other specialties with massage therapy

As humans, we all tend to ignore what our bodies are saying, especially muscle tension. By incorporating other medical specialties with massage, back spasms, neck pain, and headaches can become minor conditions.

Massage therapy at BackFit will introduce you to the benefits of wellness care, such as incorporating chiropractic care or physical therapy.  If you’re in pain, a combination of these specialities can help you manage your stress, tension, and pain.

Massage sessions take place in a private room at BackFit offices on a massage table. Sessions are available for 60 minutes and 90 minutes. Please contact us here or call ahead to schedule your massage.
