What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a licensed health care profession that is primarily concerned with diagnosis and treatment of mechanical problems within the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine.

The main chiropractic treatment is a manual therapy technique called an adjustment. Adjustments are done mostly on the spine but can be performed on almost any joint.

There are dozens of adjustment techniques, including drop table and the activator method. More on these methods below.

The diversified technique (DCT) is the most common adjustment technique and likely the one you think of as a “manual adjustment.” Specifically, the diversified technique involves application of a short (low-amplitude), quick (high-velocity) thrust over a restricted joint one at a time. The goal of adjustments through DCT and all other methods is to restore normal range of motion to a joint.

Chiropractors at BackFit Health + Spine often include an interdisciplinary approach, such as exercise, lifestyle counseling, nutrition counseling, and medical intervention.

What symptoms and conditions does chiropractic treat?

Adjustments by a chiropractor can relieve pain and address many common conditions such as:

…and many more conditions with acute and chronic pain symptoms.

Those with osteoarthritis, spinal cord compression, or inflammatory arthritis, or those taking blood-thinning medication are not good candidates for chiropractic. If you have history of cancer, talk to your oncologist if chiropractic is right for you.

What education and licensure do chiropractors need?

In order to practice, chiropractors are required to:

  • Complete an undergraduate degree, usually in a science.
  • Complete a 4-year Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program.
  • Pass the National Board of Chiropractic exam.
  • Acquire a state license, often with state-specific testing.
  • Complete continuing education courses.

Chiropractic education includes coursework in biology, anatomy & physiology, supervised clinical experience assessing, diagnosing, and adjusting the spine and joints, and more.

The scope of chiropractic practices vary from state to state, specifically the type of services DCs are allowed to provide in your state.

Most health insurance plans now cover chiropractic care.

What is drop table method?

Chiropractors are trained in a number of techniques depending on their training and their practice development. The drop table method (also known as the Thompson technique) is very commonly practiced, with drop tables at all of our BackFit clinics.

The drop table technique uses a special table that moves. The table has segments that can be lifted up a few inches and dropped down. In contrast to diversified technique, your adjustment on a drop table is low-velocity with the assistance of gravity.

Drop table technique is especially suited for pregnancy care, pediatric care, low back and hip adjustments, kyphotic neck curve (“hunchback”), and much more. It is also well suited for those that prefer to not be manually adjusted by hand.

What is the activator method?

The activator method uses a small, spring-loaded, hand-held instrument, also called an activator. This instrument delivers a low-force but specific impulse to a targeted vertebrae or joint. An activator adjustment feels a lot like a reflex test, such as the reflex tests that you’ve probably had done on your knees.

As one of the most widely researched adjustment methods in chiropractic, the activator method’s low force is an excellent alternative to a traditional manual adjustment. It is very gentle and especially suited for TMJ disorders, disc problems, neurological conditions, inflammation at the joints, and more.

Children and seniors particularly appreciate the gentle adjustment the activator method provides.

What can I expect for my first visit?

Here at BackFit, our doctors of chiropractic approach patient care similarly to conventional medicine:

  1. Consult with the patient.
  2. Obtain a detailed health history.
  3. Perform an examination and tests.
  4. Obtain x-rays or other imaging in-house.
  5. Develop a working diagnosis.

Once a diagnosis is reached with you, our doctors of chiropractic provide you with a number of options for a treatment plan. If you have insurance, we also call your insurance company for you to confirm your chiropractic benefits. Or if you do not, we can discuss flexible cash plans with you.

Treatment always takes patient choice into account. You can choose what adjustments you receive to what parts of your body and what method is used for your adjustment.

Along with adjustments, at BackFit your personalized plan might also include interdisciplinary treatment in-house from one of our other providers, such as physical therapy, massage therapy, medical services, pain management, and more.

Absolutely love this place! My husband and I have been going here for a while, and every time they remember us. We never have to re-explain anything. From the front desk to the medical team and chiropractors, they genuinely care. I’ve been having issues with my back and knee for as long as I can remember, and they helped make me feel better then I ever have. It's hard to find businesses that are run like BackFit. They have what is best for you at heart. Thanks for making my husband and I feel better then we’ve felt in years!

I would highly recommend BackFit. The staff and doctors are wonderful and my treatment has been very successful. My migraine headaches and sciatic nerve pain are completely gone. I have significantly less lower back pain and much more range of motion despite the fact that the disc in my back was very damaged. I can now go about my daily living without health issues getting in the way.

Great adjustments. Friendly staff too. Good therapists for exercising and stretching before I get adjusted. Been going for 4 years, totally love coming to get adjusted. Not scary at all. I had severe lower back pain and spasms. When I go for a routine adjustment it keeps from back pain occurring and my back spasming.

Going to BackFit was one of the best decisions I've made. I couldn't get out of bed because of severe back pain. I called BackFit and they were able to see me that day. They took x-rays in office. Loved that I didn't have to go anywhere else. Went back a couple days later to go over x-ray results with the chiropractor and started working on a solution, also with their in-house physician assistant and physical therapist. Not only have they been able to relieve the pain in my back but they have worked on other kinks in my body. Oh, and they also helped me lose weight. What more can I say, the people are amazing and the results are amazing! If anything in your body hurts, go to BackFit!

I look forward and enjoy every visit in my road to back recovery. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming. I will no longer be looking for another chiropractor office to meet my back needs. I also like the fact they provide other health needs.
